GLOBAL PRODUCTION NETWORKS

What

we do

We explore the organization and operation of global production networks in Europe and beyond. For example, we examine the role of foreign direct investment in regional economic development, the restructuring of global production networks due to geopolitical instability, or the transformation of the European automotive industry toward electric vehicle manufacturing. We investigate how company tier, ownership, and size shape the ability to create and capture value within global production networks. Join us in exploring these complex issues, which contribute to the understanding of regional economic effects of integration in global production networks.

Key research themes

We explore the crucial importance of value creation and capture in global production networks for a successful regional economic development. We investigate the role of domestic and foreign firms, as well as of government policies in these complex processes.

Value capturing

1

As one of multiple strategic firm-level responses to the recent dynamics of the world economy, reshoring refers to the relocation of manufacturing and services from abroad back to home economies by transnational corporations. We explore how reshoring affects the organization and operation of global production networks and its implications for domestic job creation, technological innovation, and sustainable practices within different industries.

We explore the development and restructuring of the European automotive industry, including its transition toward the production of electric vehicles. We focus on how firm-level strategies, along with government policies, are continuously reshaping the geography of the European automotive industry, including the geographic distribution of jobs, investment, and other regional development effects.

Domestic firms play an important role in global production networks by contributing to value creation and capture, employment, and regional economic resilience. We explore the effects of integration of domestic firms in global production networks in different industries on regional economic development.
